Residential and commercial architects in London’s Royal Borough of Greenwich

Apex Director David Hurcombe started practicing architecture in London over 30 years ago, having studied at Kingston University. Years later, following a move to the Forest of Dean, David returned to London setting up offices in Surrey Docks and later Southwark, near to Waterloo.

More recently, joined by his son Joe and other members of the Apex team, David moved the offices to Greenwich, chosen because of its interesting mix of architectural styles and its excellent connections to the rest of the city, making it easy to work with commercial and residential clients across London. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its rich maritime history – which we think makes it rather special.

The architecture of the area

In Greenwich itself we have a number of iconic buildings to inspire us. From the Royal Observatory to the National Maritime Museum and even the beautiful Jacobean mansion of Charlton House. And thanks to the Queen’s House, built for Anne of Denmark by Inigo Jones in the 1600s and the Old Royal Naval College designed around a hundred years later by Sir Christopher Wren, Greenwich has long been associated with some of Britain’s most prolific architects.

And there are modern architectural masterpieces throughout the borough too. From the revamped Greenwich market to the Stirling-prize-winning Laban building and of course the world-famous Millennium Dome (now the O2 Arena) – the area, like much of London itself benefits from the juxtaposition of old and new. All you need do is take a walk into the beautiful Greenwich Park (which we do frequently) to appreciate just how varied the London skyline is as you gaze past old Greenwich to the iconic skyscrapers of Canary Wharf.

Our architectural services in Greenwich

Much of the residential work we do from our London architecture practice is concerned with conserving, extending or repairing the traditional Victorian and Edwardian houses within the area. Many of these sit within conservation areas, are listed buildings or have their own challenges thanks to the age of the properties and local planning strategies.

While in Greenwich itself, as well as the nearby areas of Lewisham and Blackheath, we find we have the opportunity to create exciting modern architectural interventions. While we remain conscious of the impact of these buildings on their surroundings, there’s certainly something thrilling about creating a building that stands out and garners attention for all the right reasons.

And we regularly undertake commercial projects working with established property developers in the area too.
